September 2008: James W. Shaw
James W. Shaw has played an integral part in the success of the Epsilon Gamma. The current owner of 4611 College Avenue, Mr. Shaw had the courage to stand up to the unruly members in the early 90's and had the determination to seek out leader at Maryland to get the chapter back on track in 2000. It is only right that Mr. Shaw be the first alumnus spotlighted for the new website. We asked Mr. Shaw about some of his experiences in Alpha Tau Omega and here is what he had to say:
What for you has been the best part of Alpha Tau Omega?
JWS: I have received numerous positive rewards from my ATO experience:
Having spent my younger life in a small town I had the opportunity
to be a Brother with many men who I respected as an Undergraduate.
My respect has only grown over the years. Many of my classmates
were veterans from the Korean War who gave me the opportunity to
experience "College Life" from a different point of view.
And now I continue to enjoy life with my new Brothers by seeing the
quality of the young men now in the fraternity. This only confirms
my belief that an ATO experience has great value throughout life.
What is your fondest ATO memory?
JWS: My fondest memory was to see the ATO Chapter restored with great
young men on the College Park Campus and experiencing their continued
success.
How has ATO contributed to your professional career?
JWS: Recognizing that I am only standing on the shoulders of many
Brothers that I will probably have to account to at some point has
given me the strength and fortitude to try and live a quality life.
The personal qualities that our founders stated in our creed still
remain a good yardstick to live by.
What have you been upto since your time at UMD?
JWS: My life has had many turns, a wonderful wife who I met
at Maryland, two children who I love, 5 years as an Airforce Pilot,
an IBM Salesman, a Memorex Manager, a partner in several financial
companies, a founder of a Bank, an owner of a Clipper Ship, have
written a book and lectured on Career Strategies and many other
ventures, some good and some not so good. "And the Beat goes On".
What are your hobbies?
JWS: My Hobbies are counseling young people in career development and
encouraging them, seeing my friends as often as possible and
spending time with my family including my five grandchildren.
What message would you like to give to the active members?
JWS: My message to the Active members are to read and understand the ATO
creed. It has served many of us well over the years. Remember they
are all watching you!
